About the event: Join us for the day as we celebrate our seasons.  This is your mid-year opportunity to reinvigorate your team and your business through networking and education, preparing you for the transition into our winter season.  The day begins with Summer as we hold tours of the beautiful Hidden Lake Gardens and our traditional trade show featuring green industry snow & ice suppliers.  It isn’t a Field Day without a picnic and your registration includes a classic BBQ lunch with all of the fixin’s and great networking with your peers. The day ends with Winter and the focus turns to education developed to strengthen your snow & ice opportunities.

About our host: Hidden Lake Gardens is located in the Irish Hills area of southeastern Michigan. The 755-acre botanic gardens and arboretum are owned and operated by Michigan State University. The Gardens were given to Michigan State College, as MSU was once called, in 1945 by Mr. harry Fee, an Adrian businessman who possessed a love for landscape pictures and gardens. Mr. Fee purchased 226 acres in 1926 and started his dream of a landscape arboretum that would be enjoyed by the public. The property has been expanded over the years since to enhance the visitors’ experience. The Gardens provide something for everyone with six miles of paved roads and five miles of marked hiking trails, enchanting vistas, picnic areas, a conservatory, educational facilities, specialized collections, trees, shrubs, perennials, and annual plantings. Over 50 educational classes every year are designed for many ages, ranging from adults to preschoolers. The staff at the Gardens organizes and hosts the Lenawee County Master Gardener Program as well.  Hidden Lake Gardens is home to three world-class botanical collections: the Harper Collection of Rare and Dwarf Conifers, the Ralph and Dorothy Benedict Hosta Hillside (Michigan Hosta Society Collection) and, the Bonsai Collection in the MacCready Bonsai Courtyard.  These three collections serve as the Gardens’ backbone and highlight many other diverse plant groupings.

Exhibits: Booth spaces will be filled with dealers exhibiting tractors and equipment for both the Green and White industries, nursery stock, sod, stone, mulch, concrete products, pots and containers, chemicals and fertilizers, deicing companies, and other industry products and services. This is an excellent opportunity to see what is new in the industry, as well as meet current and prospective suppliers.

Lunch menu: As part of your registration, enjoy a BBQ lunch with all the fixin’s!

of the abundant educational opportunities included in each tour.
Tour 1: The Harper Collection of Rare and Dwarf Conifers - This collection has been at Hidden Lake Gardens since 1981. 27 years ago, Justin “Chub” harper donated 351 different specimen from his own backyard. In 2007, that number had risen to almost 500. The beauty of the Harper Collection lies in its design as well as its location on a majestic hillside and in a glen of the Gardens. It is a true landscape of conifers with various hues of green that includes “MSU Green” along with yellow and blue interspersed for interest. Every form of growth can be seen, from the very upright Xanthocyparis nootkatensis ‘Green Arrow’ to the soft mantle of Pinus strobus ‘Pendula’, to the intriguing growth of the Picea abies ‘Virgata’.

Tour 2: The Ralph and Dorothy Benedict Hosta Hillside - The Ralph and Dorothy Benedict Hosta Hillside is on the site of Mr. Fee’s original rock garden. Many have dubbed the hillside “Hosta Heaven”. The thousands of plants and 400-plus cultivars of hosta here are some of the best in the United States. In fact, none are in a more picturesque setting than these nestled along the shimmering Hidden Lake. Hosta Hillside has been nationally registered since 1995. It includes the Michigan Hybridizers Gardens with its collection of “Michigan born” plants.

Tour 3: The MacCready Bonsai Courtyard - The MacCready Bonsai Courtyard boasts a world-class collection of plants said to rival that of the U.S. National Collection in Washington D.C.  The Gardens’ Bonsai include many plants of varying ages and styles. There are American Larch forests, Cotoneaster, Trident Maples, Japanese White Pine, and Junipers to name a few. Jack Wikle brought Bonsai to the Gardens in 1968. He serves, to this day, as curator of this collection. In addition to his donations of plants, his dedication, expertise and service have allowed the display to thrive for the past 40 years. This strong foundation ensures a long and vibrant future for Hidden Lake Bonsai.
