MNLA’s 2019 Landscape Design Tour takes place on August 19 & 20th.  We are excited to offer two great days of landscape and garden tours in Northern Michigan, and welcome you to join us for one or both days.  On Monday, August 19th, the tour will kick off in Mackinaw City, as the group boards the 8:30 am ferry to historic Mackinac Island.  Upon arrival, Jack Barnwell of Jack Barnwell Design (www.jackbarnwelldesign.com) will provide us with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the historic homes whose landscapes he’s designed. Not only will you be stunned by the beauty of the gardens, but also impressed by how daily operations are done “island-style” – AKA without motors!  We’ll enjoy a group lunch, then swing by the iconic Grand Hotel.  The day will end at 4:30pm, when we board the ferry back to Mackinaw City.   For those attending both days of the tour, you’ll head over to Petoskey, where we’ll depart the morning of the 20th for a second day of landscape touring in the Petoskey/Charlevoix area.

Below, we’ve attempted to answer all potential questions regarding the tour, whether you plan to go one or both days.  However, if there’s something we didn’t cover, don’t hesitate to contact Emily Huening at Emily@MNLA.org or by phone at (517) 381-0437.

Is my reservation transferrable?
-    Yes.  If you are unable to attend the tour, you may transfer your registration at no cost.

What does the cost of the tour include?
-    Day 1: The registration fee includes roundtrip ferry tickets (which comes with free parking), all transportation on the island, and lunch on the island. The price does NOT include dinner or hotel reservations.
-    Day 2: The registration fee includes transportation on the bus, lunch, light breakfast, snacks and drinks.

Where will I stay?
-    For those attending both days of the tour, a block of rooms has been reserved at the AmericInn by Wyndham hotel located at 2645 Charlevoix Ave, Petoskey, MI 49770. Phone: (231) 439-8000. The group rate is $135 plus taxes for a double queen room. You must mention “Nursery” in order to receive the discount. All reservations must be made on your own.
-    If you are planning to stay the night of Sunday, August 18 in Mackinaw City, a comprehensive list of available hotels can be found at http://www.mackinaw-city.com.

When should I reserve my room?
-    As soon as possible! The room block is guaranteed at the MNLA group rate before July 21st.  Be sure to mention “Nursery” to receive the discount.

Do I have to stay in the designated hotel?
-    No.  For locals, or those lucky Michiganders who have cabins or places to stay Up North, we have arranged for a bus pick-up at the Petoskey Meijer (1201 Lears Rd.). The bus will leave on the morning of the 20th from the group hotel, then pick up all additional attendees at the Meijer.  If you are staying in another location, you must meet in the Meijer parking lot to board the bus the morning of the 20th.

I am traveling alone.  Can I share a room with another attendee in order to save on cost?
-    Yes.  Please notify Emily at time of registration, so that you can be paired with the next attendee of your gender requesting a roommate.

What transportation is included?
-    Day 1: The ferry ride to and from the island, as well as all transportation on the island, is included. Attendees will be responsible for transportation to the ferry dock in Mackinaw City.
-    Day 2: Transportation by charter bus is included during the tour. Attendees not staying overnight at the AmericInn will need to meet at the Meijer pick-up location, at 1201 Lears Rd., Petoskey.

Am I able to drive separately to each of the gardens?
-    Day 2: No. The cost of the tour includes bus transportation.  Private properties will allow only our tour bus to enter.

Will I need to purchase my own meals?
-    Day 1: Only lunch is included.  You will need to provide your own breakfast and dinner.
-    Day 2: If you are staying at the AmericInn, continental breakfast is offered by the hotel.  There will also be a light breakfast on the bus and snacks available throughout the day.  Lunch is included in the cost of the tour.

Will any dietary restrictions be accommodated?
-    Yes!  If you have any dietary restrictions, please notify Emily immediately, as menus are planned in advance.
